History

The old palace was built by Wittelsbacher Maximilian I (1573 – 1651),
the first prince of Bavaria, in 1616. He received this honour through his
influence as one of the leaders in the catholic party in the 30 year war.

The Lustheim place was built by the grandson of Maximilian, prince Max
Emanuel I (1662 – 1726) after his marriage to the daughter of emperor,
Maria Antonia between 1684 and 1688.

The third and largest palace, originally the summer house, was built by
Max Emanuel between 1701 and 1721. The original plans for a Bavarian
Versailles, a palace with four wings, could not be built because of the
financial situation at the time.

The work began on the baroque gardens and integrated canal system in
1689. Approach canals were built leading to Schleißheim. The prince
wanted to create a landscape resembling that of Holland, using a canal
system in the monotonous north Munich countryside.

As general in the military, Max Emanuel proved himself through his
victories over the Turks. In 1691 he was declared the defender of the
Spanish Netherlands after his efforts in the second war with France.
